Rabbi Rudin

The Seder is when we mindfully create a positive Jewish family memory, made up of equal parts connection, fun, ritual, special foods and personal meaning.  The Seder focuses on all of us with starring roles for each and every participant.  The key to a great Seder is preparation.  While there are infinite lists of Seder-enhancing activities all over the internet, only you know who will be at your Seder and you can craft the evening with your guests in mind.  If you are being hosted, you can tactfully ask your host how you can help enrich the Seder.

While there are games and customs, song parodies and additional questions to ask, it is also good to give thought to emphasizing the most meaningful parts of the Seder including asking guests to mention the names of people they are remembering, a moving Seder experience, or dedicating the Seder to causes, prayers, dreams and hopes.  Take a moment to share the big picture: why are we doing this?  What do we hope and dream for the Jewish people, all of humanity?  How can our traditions and heritage become more meaningful to us where we are right now?

My family always begins the Seder with Cantor Linda Hirschorn’s beautiful song/chant “Circle Round for Freedom”.  I invite you to consider incorporating this simple, powerful piece of liturgy into your Seder- it’s short, easy to learn and contains such a beautiful intention, especially now.

Circle round for freedom, circle round for peace

For all of us imprisoned, circle for release

Circle for the planet, circle for each soul

For the children of our children, keep the circle whole.

In this second year after October 7th, it is important to remember the fifty nine hostages still held in Gaza, in particular Bar Kuperstein, whose best friend, Din Tesler, spoke at Adath Shalom and was hosted by Ilyssa Tepperman and her family.  Please consider printing out the poster of Bar below from the Wiesenthal Center and setting a chair aside at your Seder for this outstanding young man with prayers for his speedy return home.
