Chevre, (Friends),

Just as the seder during Pesach (Passover) has its Four Questions, the observance of Purim has its Four Mitzvot (commandments): Reading/hearing the Megillah, (Book of Esther), sending mishloach manot, (gift baskets), the Seudah, (festive meal), and Matanot La'evyonim, giving to the poor. You may hear some people say that another commandment is to get so drunk that you can't tell the difference between "cursed be Haman" and "blessed be Mordechai".  Thankfully, in the last decade, there has been much written and discussed to clarify and educate. Putting your own health, and heaven forbid, the safety of others, if you'll be driving, is not the commandment.

During these days of celebration, may we all find the smiles within us, to share with others in need; may we observe our traditions with respect and gratitude; and may our focus on pursuing justice help us to rid the world of war and despair. Chag Purim Sameach!
