Chevre (Friends),

This Shabbat  begins the month of Av. For many, this represents a summer month, and not much more. There are so many ways to think about time and how we experience it. As I write this, we are eight weeks from Erev Rosh Hashanah. Of course, for a synagogue community, that means there is much work to be done! Getting everything ready from the building to the machzorim (the High Holiday prayer books), to the services, with the many details involved in helping them to run smoothly. The month of Av can also be the reminder alert that now is our time to prepare ourselves for a meaningful High Holiday experience.

When I was a seminary student, one of the books I was assigned in my Theology class changed my life. It changed my relationship to God and to organized religion. It changed my sense of self. It knocked me off my feet. With love, I highly recommend Rabbi Alan Lew's (z"l).This is Real and You Are Completely Unprepared.

The time is now. You can continue on the same path, without much thought, and ask yourself why things are "happening" to you. Or, you can stop and wake up and really look and think, and see what your role is in your own life. Do you want meaningful Jewish practice? It doesn't happen in one sitting and it doesn't happen to you. I invite you to shake things up and to challenge yourself, starting now. Starting during the month of Av.

Wishing each of you insight, peace, and shalom.
