Happy 95th Birthday to Our Beloved Olga!

01/13/2021 02:31:57 PM

Jan13

Our beloved Olga Menczer turns 95 this Wednesday, January 13, 2021.

Olga is a legend in many circles and a Rock Star at Adath Shalom! Simply put, we just adore her! Olga tells it like it is, hugs and cries without abandon, and takes young and old under her wings of love. We are blessed to call her our Olga!

This past Shabbat, I had asked Olga if I might sing a song in honor of her special birthday. Without hesitation, Olga said “Eli, Eli is my favorite song. I just love it!” She then went on to tell me some of the memorable occasions when it was performed or sung just for her.  One of those occasions was at Cantor Brian Kalver’s congregation, Congregation B’nai Israel. Cantor Brian sang his rendition just before Olga was about to deliver a talk, and she was so moved, it took a while to then take the stage and deliver her presentation.  Cantor Brian and Sue Och’s daughter, Emily Kalver, is an alumna of the Zamir Choir and she also wanted to share in this musical gift for Olga.

Here are some links to “Eli, Eli” in honor our beloved Olga Menzer’s 95th birthday. And, as we say, in our Hebrew/Yiddish/Jewish….blessing:

Hebrew: עד מאה ועשרים שנה‎: Ad me'ah ve-essrim shana;

Yiddish: ביז הונדערט און צוואַנציק; Biz hundert un tsvantsig),

May you live "till 120" (and beyond!!)

Happy New Year, Again

Dec30

Living in two calendars offers twice the opportunities to celebrate, reflect, honor, and connect. We have our Jewish birthdates and our secular birthdates, our loved ones' yahrtzeits and the secular anniversaries of their passing, our Jewish wedding anniversary and our American wedding anniversary. We observed Rosh Hashanah, the "Head" of the Jewish new year, back in September, and, at this writing, tomorrow night is New Year's Eve. Some of...Read more...

Chevre (Friends),

As we prepare for the last Shabbat of 2020, I reflect back on the many challenges and losses we have faced, as a community. I am also greatly appreciative of the creativity and openness we have brought to keeping our community together, and I look forward to new beginnings in the new secular year.

We may not all gather together for our Friday Night services, but I've enjoyed reaching out to many...Read more...

Chevre (Friends),

Just before the High Holidays, I was interviewed by a journalist from The Forward. I happened upon the article last week, and although it is from a few months ago, the situation has not really changed. I encourage you to read it, as it describes the challenges faced by congregations, where singing is part of the service. On a personal note, here, my husband, Nathan, often would share stories of his beloved...Read more...

A Moment of Meditation Update

Nov18

 Chevre, (Friends),

Our initial attempt at offering “A Moment of Meditation” on Tuesday mornings at 10am seemed to have gone rather well! As long as our luck continues, and “the creek don’t rise,” we’ll keep it going!

You can find the Zoom link on our Adath Shalom calendar, or visit my “Cantor Lois” Facebook page. It’s just a five to ten-minute meditation to help us stop, breathe, center, and then get...Read more...

Chevre (Friends),

I hope you are all well, and are taking care of yourselves. These past few weeks have been filled with increased anxiety across the nation, and, for many families in our own community, increased personal challenges of health and well-being. Adath Shalom is a loving community, and time and time again, we are there for each other.

Facing the challenges of isolation for some, and over-burdening for...Read more...

Beresheet and Broadway

10/15/2020 02:26:16 PM

Oct15

My dear friends,

This Shabbat we begin again, with Beresheet, the first book of the Torah. I am feeling nostalgic and yearning for Broadway and regional theatre, and all the marvelous miracles of creation theatre provides.

Many years ago, in one of my cabaret shows, I sang a song by Maury Yeston, from his musical, "In the Beginning." In a loving nod to the magic that is creation, here is a lovely version of "New Words,"  as sung by Brian Stokes Mitchell. May we all find the strength to begin again, each and every day, and may you find comfort and delight in this beautiful rendition of "New Words."

My Dear Adath Shalom community,

L'Shanah Tovah Tikateivu v'Teikhateimu!
May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year!

As we continue our journey of Biblical proportions, across the desert of unknowns, using the advances of technology and teamwork every step along our way, I find it easier and easier to picture myself, along with all of you, as real people, living the stories of our Torah!
